This year's summer holiday was a trip to Harris, in the Outer Hebrides, via the Isle of Skye. "Paris? How lovely." people kept saying when asking us where we were going on holiday.

In August, the temperature in the Outer Hebrides is actually quite pleasant, but it does suffer from the wind and rain at times, and this holiday was no exception: it rained heavily most days (though not always continously), and the wind at times made progress on foot or bike very difficult. Even the locals said it was unusually bad. That said, we didn't let it stop us having fun. We got outside every day, and we managed several bike rides and runs, some walks, and even a few barbecues. The holiday cottage was well equipped, with a fancy coffee machine, plenty of space to dry wet stuff (of which there was lots), and a sauna for recuperating in after several hours of cycling in torrential rain. I must confess it was also good at drying shoes.
