The final two days of the Western Desert trip were spent visiting more oases, tombs and mummies. We visited the fascinating Al Qasr Islamic Village, near the Dakhla Oasis, saw the Great Sand Sea, and ended up in a quirky hotel in Farafra Oasis, about the only bit of Egypt that doesn't sell alcohol. We then went on a 4WD safari into the White Desert, and camped out among the strange windswept rock formations. This night was the first camping night that was cold, and at last the three season sleeping bag paid off.
We woke the next morning to see Desert Fox footprints round our sleeping bags... we packed our stuff up, and got 4WDd at breakneck speed (through the sand - it feels quite weird) back to the road, where our ever reliable bus driver was waiting. We bid farewell to our security guard, who had finally thawed out from the previous night (why they don't equip their army I don't know), and got into the bus to sit and admire eight more hours of desert scenery on the way back to Cairo. The desert is very large, and it takes ages to get anywhere in it.
